8 Cargo Ship Wrecks Across History: Moon Trailer Leasing Halloween Special about Cargo Ship Wreck

Historic Cargo Shipwrecks from the Cargo Container Pros

Approaching Halloween, many of us are looking for something scary to indulge in, and Moon is always aiming to deliver! Cargo ship and freighter wrecks can be scary and disastrous in many ways, considering how large cargo ships usually are, how many different kinds of products they carry, and how much money was spent on those products. When a cargo ship wrecks, not only can it have dire environmental effects and compromise the safety of the crew, but it can throw the economy and supply and demand out of whack with missing products or, in one very recent case, a backed-up canal.

As a company with decades of experience buying, selling and renting a cargo container, the Moon Company team is your “go to” on cargo shipping containers. Follow along for details about 8 cargo ship wrecks across history to accompany this Halloween season!

The Ancient Wreck

This Roman cargo ship wrecked more than 2,000 years ago, yet the goods aboard still survived. The ship carrying hundreds of ancient Roman jars called ‘amphorae’ was estimated to be more than 20 meters long and sailed through the 1st or 2nd century BC. Talk about the ancestor of today’s cargo ships!

The Leader L

In 2000, tragedy struck a 776 foot cargo ship carrying salt called the Leader L off of the coast of Bermuda, where it sank within hours and took the lives of 18 crewmembers. Caused by a loose steel hull plate that allowed the hold to flood and sink the ship, this sunken ship has the highest death count on the list, with only 13 of the 31 crew members found alive, 6 found tragically lost, and the other 12 crewmen having been missing and presumed dead the night of the wreck after a full day of search and rescue.

The Hanjin Pennsylvania

Wrecked with an onboard explosion in 2002 off of Sri Lanka, the Hanjin Pennsylvania was a terrible wreck because of the cargo it carried. After 4 days of burning on the open sea, the fire reached one or more containers that contained fireworks and were mis-declared on the ship’s manifesto. This prompted a 2nd explosion and, in total, the explosions took the lives of 2 crew members.

The MSC Napoli

The MSC Napoli wrecked on January 18th, 2007 due to stormy weather and 30 foot tall waves damaging the hull in way of the engine room. The crew abandoned ship and all survived, but so did the toxic materials and oil that began leaking into the ocean, contaminating the waters until the government was able to remove most of the substances. The ship lost 114 containers and 80 of them washed up on shore and were pillaged. The accident was deemed the 2nd most expensive wreck at the time, costing approximately $127.3 million and the salvage taking 924 days in total.

The Rena Disaster

As a cargo wreck with one of the worst ecological impacts, the 2011 wreck of the Rena grounded on the popular and ecologically-important Astrolabe Reef in the Bay of Plenty located on New Zealand’s coast. This wreck was especially damaging due to the oil spill that began almost immediately after the grounding, releasing 200 tons of heavy fuel, and the fact that the cargo ship was carrying 1,386 containers – 11 of which were carrying hazardous substances like ferrosilicon, a material that reacts and ignites upon contact with water.

MOL Comfort

Between June and July of 2013, the MOL Comfort’s cargo losses is one the the largest recorded in modern maritime history. This 5-year old ship broke in two in the Indian Ocean while carrying more than 4,000 containers. Of it’s cargo, it is estimated that 4,293 containers were lost, and this incident inspired the adoptions of new rules regarding the hull girder strength for large container ships.

Maersk Honam

The Maersk Honam was both one of the youngest and one of the largest cargo ships to wreck in recent history. The 1,158-foot ship was carrying 7,860 containers when a fire broke out in one of the cargo holds in March of 2018 as it sailed in the Arabian Sea. 4 crew members died and one was missing until declared dead as a result of the accident, and after evacuation, the fire spread to the entire cargo area and was so large that it could be seen from space.

Ever Given

In the height of a pandemic-fueled supply and shipping demand in 2021, the Ever Given grounded horizontally in the Suez Canal in Egypt when it veered off-course due to poor visibility in a sandstorm. Traffic in the canal, which handles 12% of global trade, came to a stop because of the position, and by the time the Ever Given was refloated, the backup amounted to more than 400 ships. While none of the crew was lost, the ship didn’t sustain major damage, and all cargo was left intact, the backup of such a large amount of cargo ships unable to deliver their goods threw a major wrench in the world’s economy and supply chain, costing upwards of $9 billion a day.

Moon Trailer Leasing offers leased and for sale storage containers in Shively, KY.

Trailer Leasing in Shively, KY

Shively, KY has a long history with the Louisville area as a home rule-class city in Jefferson County under the metro government, and Moon Trailer Leasing is proud to serve the area for their trailer leasing and sales needs! While the city has somewhat of a rocky past, Shively is undergoing several projects by the local and metro governments as well as the community that lives there to make it part of Kentucky’s natural charm.

A Brief History of Shively

Shively has been around practically since Louisville was founded in 1778, starting out as a small farming community whose landowners included the Shively family that the city is named after. The area once included a mill and tavern that were known as the “Shively Precinct” until 1816, when the land was donated to a church – the modern day Parkview Methodist.

In 1831, a stagecoach stop was added to the area, followed by the Elizabethtown and Paducah Railroad in the 1870s. After the Civil War, the Shively area became a refuge for German immigrants, who erected St. Helen’s Catholic Church in 1897, which was what the area was briefly known as until the Post Office couldn’t adopt the name due tot he existence of another St. Helen’s in Lee County, KY. This church and school was torn down in 2014.

The era of Prohibition and the Great Depression saw relative historic success for Shively, as the Brown-Forman distillery – who manufactures several popular brands of alcohol like Old Forester, Jack Daniels, Woodford Reserve, Finlandia, and now-sold off Early Times – managed to obtain one of the few permits to make medicinal alcohol during Prohibition, boosting the economy of the city while others’ fell. At the end of Prohibition, 8 distilleries opened in Shively, and Louisville attempted and failed to annex and tax those distilleries until they convinced the residents to incorporate separately in May of 1938. The distilleries left Shively with a $20 million revenue stream that kept it funded into the 50s and 60s, when it became the fastest-growing city in Kentucky.

The following era saw the gradual decline in the environment, brought on by the distilleries closing, the population falling, and racism taking ahold of the city as white flight segregated the area and saw the Wade Incident of 1954. Since then, the black population has increased to make up approximately 30% of the total population, but the city was again hit with scandal in the 80s, when the police chief admitted to taking bribes that would allow prostitution in the area, which earned it the nickname “Lively Shively.”

Today, Shively is a stop in the Kentucky Bourbon Trail with the Brown-Forman Distillery, a Bulleit Bourbon tourist attraction, and the Michter’s Distillery and is slowly improving with the help of various public works projects and businesses moving into the area. The city of Shively includes a total of 4.6 square miles, 0.01 square miles of it water. According to the 2020 census, the population has grown by 2.4% from 2010 to 15,636 people.

Facts about shipping container homes that you should know before you build

Fun Facts about Shipping Container Tiny Homes

Shipping containers are one of those things that have a huge impact on everyday life, but are never really talked about. Considering that they transport half of the sea-bound global goods that make their way from different continents, they’re rarely considered when it comes to consumer trends, since they’re out of sight and out of mind. They’ve been here, though, helping us get goods across the sea since the mid-1950s, but it wasn’t until 1987 that the first patented shipping container home came about.

Since then, they’ve grown in popularity, but are still considered a relative rarity when it comes to permanent living solutions. Since used shipping containers sell for cheaper prices than you’d find for most other pre-built materials, they do seem pretty convenient to use as a foundation to your new living situations. If you’re interested in buying or renting a used shipping container, you can always contact Moon for a quote! If you’re still thinking about it, or perhaps you’re just interested in the concept, here’s 5 fun facts about shipping container homes that you might not have known!

1. You never know what it was used for to ship.

One thing that needs to be taken into account when searching and getting quoted for a used shipping container is the materials that it once shipped. Any container that was used to ship hazardous materials won’t be available for the general public’s use, but in regards to allergies or general cleanliness, you’ll definitely want to double check with your contractor what exactly used to reside within the walls of your potential home.

2. The total cost for building shipping container houses are lower than traditional houses.

This being said, when it comes to living quarters, nothing ever should be cheap. Quality materials that will last are of much higher value than those you can get for a quick buck. Insulation, plumbing, HVAC systems, and the like should not include any cut corners since they play an important role in your everyday life at home. This is why there is a big rift in what you’ll find pricing to be on different sites that specialize in shipping container homes, whether they sell pre-fabricated shipping container homes or only provide information on how to build one. An average that it often used for single-container homes is approximately $30,000 – but again, that’s all dependent on the services and materials you choose to employ in your shipping container home.

3. They’re very versatile.

Taking into account the fact that you can easily have as much space as you want with no limit (except for land space, that is) on the number of shipping containers you can use for your house, the modular nature of these homes is entirely customizable based on your desires and budget. The containers that Moon offer come in 20 foot and 40 foot as well as Hi-Cube dimensions to create any size of house you need.

4. They’re already durable and weatherproof.

With an original job that involves transporting goods across bodies of water, these containers have to be up for the job of protecting that which they’re entrusted with, and since most containers are retired after only a few uses, their integrity stands up to the test. Made from heavy-duty metals such as steel or aluminum and meant to withstand all kinds of weather, sea salt, and conditions, shipping containers are waterproof, fireproof, and sometimes even have earthquake and storm-resistant ratings.

5. In order to build one yourself, you’ll need professional training.

If you’re looking to DIY the entire thing, as we mentioned before, these shipping container homes are only as cheap as the materials and labor allow. If you don’t have professional training in plumbing, metalwork, carpentry, or electrician trades, you’ll want to budget for these services. Too many things can go wrong if they are attempted by a novice or guided by online tutorials, and will only make the house more expensive in the long run. 5 Amazing Storage Container Projects

5 Amazing Storage Container Projects

In the last few years, shipping/storage containers have been adapted for use in a number of building applications. Their durability, price, and availability make them a hot option for builders and buyers looking to take a step away from traditional materials and designs. Plus, because so many of these containers are built every year, building with them is an eco-friendly way to recycle the containers and keep them out of landfills. Below, we’ve put together a list of 5 amazing storage container projects to show you the potential of these containers.

Zieglerbuild house in Queensland, Australia

By now, many have heard of shipping container houses, but this home built by design and construction firm Zieglerbuild takes container builds to a new level. This 6000 square-foot home is made up of 31 individual containers. Wood floors, spacious interiors, and an in-ground saltwater pool aren’t features that come to mind when imagining living in a container home, but this astounding property offers them all and more. Visit Zieglerbuild’s gallery for some pictures of this beautiful home.

Modpools

Modpools is a company that turns shipping containers into custom built, modular swimming pools. Luxury may not be the first descriptor that comes to mind when imagining a shipping container pool, but with features like temperature control, smart lighting, and add-on hot tubs, these pools are top of the line.

Smoky Park Supper Club

The Smoky Park Supper Club holds the title for largest shipping container restaurant. Standing on the banks of the French Broad river in Asheville, North Carolina, the building is comprised of 19 storage containers. The supper club describes itself as “a gathering place for friends and family, locals and visitors, and everyone in between” and offers a diverse menu with some stellar locally-sourced options.

Vissershok primary school

The Vissershok Primary School is located in Durbanville, a valley on the outskirts of Capetown, South Africa. Positioned in a highly rural area, the school provides valuable education to an underprivileged community. Taking full advantage of its building budget, the school opted to construct a container classroom to maximize its learning space. With an attached playground, vegetable garden, and gathering area, this container classroom is a valuable asset to a school that is making a difference.

Cura Pods

Cura Pods are an open-source response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Cura-pods are basically shipping containers that are converted into temporary and mobile hospital rooms, designed for modular use. This design is especially effective for treating highly contagious diseases, since the pods double as sealed quarantine rooms. This design is very promising for use against future pandemics as well as anywhere a mobile and quick to deploy hospital is needed.

Pros and Cons of Renting or Buying Cargo Shipping Containers for Travel, Storage, International Purposes

Should I Rent or Buy A Shipping Container? 5 Important Questions To Consider

In the market for a shipping container? If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, it can be stressful! Shipping containers can be a major investment, so it’s important to consider your specific needs in the decision-making process.

Here at Moon Trailer Leasing, we talk customers through the logistics of buying and renting containers every day. We have decades of experience helping businesses and individuals make informed choices for their needs.

That’s why we’ve compiled some of the most important questions you should consider when buying or renting a container. By the time you read through these, you should have a much clearer idea of what you’re looking for! Let’s dive right in.

Question 1: What is it for?

The biggest question you’ll face is why am I purchasing a shipping container. Is your business in need of a durable shipping container for intercontinental voyages, for years on end? Are you looking to remodel a used shipping container into a tiny home, or repurpose it as a shed or pool? Do you want to customize the sides of the trailer with your business logo or some sort of design? If you want to permanently modify or maintain a shipping container for a significant amount of time, you should likely consider buying it outright.

On the other hand, if you’re using a shipping container for temporary storage, travel, an event, as an office, or for other related business endeavors, renting may be in your best interest. Asking yourself this question is a great way to get the ball rolling and begin to figure out what you’re looking for.

Question 2: How long will I need it?

The next question to consider is time-frame. Renting a shipping container is far more affordable if you plan on using it on a weekly or monthly basis. However, if you know you’ll consistently need a container for over a year, consider buying. The bottom line is: if your time-frame is up-in-the-air in any way, start with renting!

Some rental companies also provide on-site storage and delivery options for rentals, which makes the whole process a breeze. If you work with a leasing company like Moon, you won’t have to worry about finding a storage space, lugging the container around, or exposing it to the elements. We’re here to handle everything for you!

Question 3: Where will it travel?

As mentioned in Question 1, the types of trips that your shipping container will make is very important to consider. If you’re using the container for storage, renting with a company that can keep it safe for you is a great idea. If you’re thinking about taking the container around the world, or altering it in any major way, buying is better. Unfurnished containers can weigh anywhere between 5,000 and 8,000 pounds, often requiring semi-trucks using special trailers to be moved. That’s why some leasing companies offer transportation, delivery, and relocation services, which can make traveling with your container remarkably easier. At Moon, we offer all of this, as well as a preliminary Delivery Accessibility Evaluation to help assess your specific needs before bringing you your trailer.

Question 4: What size do I need?

Shipping containers are not one-size-fits-all. There are so many sizes on the market, designed for specific purposes and activities. Many people tend to overestimate and underestimate their sizing needs and purchase the wrong size container. We have both 20 ft and 40 ft containers available for purchase or rental, as well as 20 and 40 ft “Hi-cube” containers which are 1 foot taller than standard containers. If you’re stocking up a trailer for overseas or intercontinental travel, it’s not a good idea to have a lot of empty space for your items to roll around! We can evaluate your inventory and sizing needs to help you choose a trailer specific to your cargo needs.

Question 5: What quality of shipping container do I need?

Are you looking for a “brand new” trailer, or are you okay with a used one? Many used cargo containers for sale are deemed to be wind and watertight and have a long life ahead of them. Choosing to buy or rent a used trailer can be markedly more affordable, especially during shipping container shortages and economic downswings. At Moon, we rent and sell both new and used containers that are thoroughly-inspected to meet ISO requirements as well as our own rigorous quality standards. Make sure you’re working with a company you can trust, or you may find holes or signs of disrepair after it’s too late!

Trailer Leasing in Buechel Louisville Kentucky

Trailer Leasing in Buechel, Kentucky

Buechel is a neighborhood in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. It was incorporated into the city in 2003 and currently has a population of over 8,000. Located in the southern part of the city, Buechel offers parks, food, entertainment, and lots of residential desirability. Some neighborhoods around Buechel include Newburg, Fern Creek, Klondike, Bon Air, and Watterson. Let’s take a look at the history of Buechel, current attractions, and how Moon Trailer Leasing can serve your business in the area.

The History of Buechel

The history of Buechel dates back to 1791, with the arrival of George Hikes, a Revolutionary War veteran. Hikes traveled down the Ohio with his wife from Pennsylvania on a flatboat. He built a large farm as well as the first grist mill, saw mill, and wool-processing machine in the area. Currently, “Hikes’ Lane” is a road that runs through his former property, some of which still stands. At the time, the area was known as “Two-Mile Town” due to its location two miles south of the city of Louisville. The area continually grew, thanks to its location alongside the major state highway, Bardstown Road.

90 years later, in the 1870s, Buechel got its name from John Buechel, a Swiss immigrant and cabinet-maker who bought a tavern-hotel and post office on Bardstown Road. The tavern-hotel was known to be the “halfway” point between Louisville and Bardstown, a welcome respite for road-weary travelers. While Buechel’s property is long gone, the name has stuck.

Buechel Today

Today, Buechel is heavily developed and populated, in part due to the arrival of the GE plant in the 1950s and other nearby industrial operations. That being said, there are two significant green spaces in the 2.5 mile area: Buechel Park and Rest Haven Memorial Cemetery.

Buechel offers a diverse variety of cuisines. Top-rated restaurants and eateries include Jamaican Jerk Center, Pasha’s Mediterranean, Eden & Kissi, Kathmandu Kitchen and Bar, Borsalino Cafe and Deli, Track’s Bar and Grill, Arno Pizza, The Great Room, Brew and Sip Coffee Bar, My Cafe, and Wacky Willy’s Diner, located in Bill Collins Ford Lincoln of Louisville.

Popular attractions and venues in Buechel include Robben’s Roost Roller Skating Rink, Off The Rails Tasting Room and Wine Depot, Chocolate and Nut Kingdom, Progress Park Airstream Resort and Event Venue, the Southeast Family YMCA, and the West Buechel Community Center.

Moon Trailer Leasing serves southern Indiana including Clarksville

Trailer Leasing in Clarksville, Indiana

Clarksville, Indiana is a historic and prosperous community located directly across the Ohio River from downtown Louisville. While it’s a part of the Louisville metropolitan area as well as the “SoIn” (Southern Indiana) region, Clarksville’s population is only 21,724, giving it a small town feel with plenty of amenities. Keep reading to learn about the history of Clarksville as well as popular restaurants, parks, shopping, and things to do in the area!

A Brief History of Clarksville

Clarksville has a long and fascinating history. It was founded in 1783 by George Rogers Clark, the younger brother of William Clark (of Lewis and Clark). Some historians believe that the Lewis and Clark expedition officially began in Clarksville. Clarksville also happens to be the oldest American town in the former Northwest Territory. During the Revolutionary War, Clark established a military base at the Falls of the Ohio (the largest exposed Devonian fossil bed in the U.S.), where he trained a 175 man-regimen.

Due to its lack of dueling regulation laws, Clarksville was also known for being a popular dueling spot for Kentuckians, such as the likes of Henry Clay and Humphrey Marshall. In 1809, Marshall called Clay a liar on the floor of the KY House of Representatives. Clay, as customary, challenged him to a duel at Silver Creek in Clarksville. Luckily, both men survived the duel; Clay went on to become one of the most famous Kentuckians in history, and Marshall wrote the first complete history of Kentucky!

Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Clarksville was plagued by floods, hindering its growth and economic viability. In fact, during the Great Flood of 1837, Clarksville was almost entirely decimated by up to 12 feet of flooding. However, this crisis gave rise to new opportunities–during the post-World War 2 boom, Clarksville established suburbs, shopping plazas, malls, factories, expanding exponentially in size. Today, Clarksville has award-winning schools and neighborhoods, great parks, popular restaurants, and plenty to do for anyone interested.

Things To Do In Clarksville

Some popular activity centers in Clarksville include the Sportsdrome Speedway, Xtremenasium Trampoline and Ninja Park, Atlantis Waterpark, the Green Tree Mall, and the famous Colgate Clock.
