What Are OSHA-Compliant Mobile Office Stairs?

Moon Trailer Leasing has always boasted mobile offices fit to your needs. Available in 20 and 30 foot lengths, our offices offer heat and AC, vinyl flooring, interior wood paneling, florescent lighting, sliding windows, and a lockable steel exterior door all on top of space and security with different configurations that range from all office-space to a 50/50 office and storage combo. And, depending on your needs, we also offer you your choice of a ground-level office or a mounted office.

Since we offer these attractive, easily-portable mobile offices, we also offer OSHA-compliant stairs with it! But what makes them OSHA-compliant?

OSHA has several different types of regulations that apply to stairways (both temporary and otherwise), stair-rails, handrails, and midrails. Here’s what they are:

For All Stairways Used During Construction

  • Stairways that will not be a permanent part of the building under construction must have landings at least 30 inches deep and 22 inches wide (76 x 56 cm) at every 12 feet (3.7 m) or less of vertical rise
  • Stairways must be installed at least 30 degrees —and no more than 50 degrees—from the horizontal
  • Variations in riser height or stair tread depth must not exceed 1/4 inch in any stairway system, including any foundation structure used as one or more treads of the stairs
  • Doors and gates opening directly onto a stairway must have a platform that extends at least 20 inches (51 cm) beyond the swing of the door or gate
  • Metal pan landings and metal pan treads must be secured in place before filling
  • Stairway parts must be free of dangerous projections such as protruding nails
  • Slippery conditions on stairways must be corrected
  • Workers must not use spiral stairways that will not be a permanent part of the structure

For Temporary Stairs

Except during construction of the stairway:

  • Do not use stairways with metal pan landings and treads if the treads and/or landings have not been filled in with concrete or other materials unless the pans of the stairs and/or landings are temporarily filled in with wood or other materials
  • All treads and landings must be replaced when worn below the top edge of the pan
  • Do not use skeleton metal frame structures and steps (where treads and/or landings will be installed later) unless the stairs are fitted with secured temporary treads and landings
  • Temporary treads must be made of wood or other solid material and installed the full width and depth of the stair

For Stair-Rails

  • Stairways with four or more risers or rising more than 30 inches (76 cm) in height— whichever is less—must be installed along each unprotected side or edge
  • When the top edge of a stair rail system also serves as a handrail, the height of the top edge must be no more than 37 inches (94 cm) nor less than 36 inches (91.5 cm) from the upper surface of the stair rail to the surface of the tread
  • Stair rails installed after March 15,1991, must be not less than 36 inches (91.5 cm) in height.
  • Top edges of stair rail systems used as handrails must not be more than 37 inches (94 cm) high nor less than 36 inches (91.5 cm) from the upper surface of the stair rail system to the surface of the tread
  • Stair rail systems and handrails must be surfaced to prevent injuries such as punctures or lacerations and to keep clothing from snagging
  • Ends of stair rail systems and handrails must be built to prevent dangerous projections, such as rails protruding beyond the end posts of the system
  • Unprotected sides and edges of stairway landings must have standard 42-inch (1.1 m) guardrail systems
  • Intermediate vertical members, such as balusters used as guardrails, must not be more than 19 inches (48 cm) apart
  • Other intermediate structural members, when used, must be installed so that no openings are more than 19 inches (48 cm) wide
  • Screens or mesh, when used, must extend from the top rail to the stairway step and along the opening between top rail supports

For Handrails

  • Handrails and top rails of the stair rail systems must be able to withstand, without failure, at least 200 pounds (890 n) of weight applied within 2 inches (5 cm) of the top edge in any downward or outward direction, at any point along the top edge
  • Handrails must not be more than 37 inches (94 cm) high nor less than 30 inches (76 cm) from the upper surface of the handrail to the surface of the tread
  • Handrails must provide an adequate handhold for employees to grasp to prevent falls
  • Temporary handrails must have a minimum clearance of 3 inches (8 cm) between the handrail and walls, stair rail systems and other objects
  • Stairways with four or more risers, or that rise more than 30 inches (76 cm) in height— whichever is less—must have at least one handrail
  • Winding or spiral stairways must have a handrail to prevent use of areas where the tread width is less than 6 inches (15 cm)

For Midrails

  • Midrails, screens, mesh, intermediate vertical members or equivalent intermediate structural members must be provided between the top rail and stairway steps to the stair rail system
  • When midrails are used, they must be located midway between the top of the stair rail system and the stairway steps
  • Employers must train all employees to recognize hazards related to ladders and stairways, and instruct them to minimize these hazards.
    • For example, employers must ensure that each employee is trained by a competent person in the following areas, as applicable:
      • Nature of fall hazards in the work area
      • Correct procedures for erecting, maintaining
and disassembling the fall protection systems
        to be used
      • Proper construction, use, placement and care
in handling of all stairways and ladders
      • Maximum intended load-carrying capacities of
        ladders used.
  • Employers must retrain each employee as necessary to maintain their understanding and knowledge on the safe use and construction of ladders and stairs

Options for Portable Offices – 5 Important Things To Consider

Portable offices are typically thought of as offices that are movable and comparatively easier to set up and take down in shorter stints of time. Some types of portable office rentals are even easily transported from one location to another, which makes these great options if you are in a situation where you may need to rent a portable office space for an extended period of time, but to also need to be able to move it to various locations.

When it comes to portable offices, there are a variety of options, depending on your unique needs, location, and budget.

Many event planners, construction site managers, builders, and companies undergoing renovations and/or staffing and building changes, have a need for some type of portable office space at some point in time. Portable offices can provide a quick and easy solution for fast expansion or unexpected changes, and they are often used as onsite classrooms, training facilities, staffing overflow space, storage units, medical treatment buildings, and more.

If you are considering renting a portable office and exploring your options, there are some things you should know in order to make a good decision based on your needs.

Follow along for some important things you should think about when you are considering renting a mobile office unit.

5 Things To Consider While Looking For Portable Office Rental

1. What size do you need?

Portable offices vary in considerably in terms of their dimensions. The most common units vary from 20 feet to 40 feet in size, and include 20-, 30- and 40-foot units.

2. How portable do you need your mobile office to be?

While the word “portable” suggests that every portable office is movable in some way, some units are especially portable because they are built on wheels. If you need a portable office that is built on wheels, this may impact the size of the unit. Typically portable office trailers on wheels are available as 20 or 30 foot units.

3. What type of layout do you need in your portable office rental unit?

While many portable offices look similar on the outside, the types of layouts inside vary significantly based on the unique needs of those using the space. For example, if you are a school using a portable office as a classroom you may will need a layout that is conducive to the types of seating and learning tools and style you will use in the space. This may include a very open design. Comparatively if you are using a mobile office as a medical treatment center, your portable office may need to feature a cluster of smaller spaces that offer privacy.

4. What type of flooring, lighting, heating, electrical outlets, air conditioning, and security are you seeking?

While every portable office rental company is not the same, when you rent a portable office from Moon Trailer Leasing in Louisville and Lexington Kentucky, you can expect certain standard features to all of our units. All of our portable office trailers have walls, ceilings and floors that are insulated. Our mobile offices also have vinyl flooring, interior wood paneling, florescent lighting, electric heating and air conditioning and windows that open, and secure steel exterior doors that lock.

5. What type of accessibility are you seeking for your portable office?

Perhaps one of the biggest ways that portable offices vary is in whether or not they are designed at ground level or put together with stairs. Portable offices with stairs should always include OSHA approved steps for easier access. Portable offices that are built at ground level do not require any stairs for entry. Larger 40-foot office units are often delivered to your site on a tilt bed trailer. This may be another consideration, depending on the location.

Decarbonization in the Shipping Industry

There are some major changes underway in the shipping industry. Recently, several major organizations in the industry committed to decarbonization by 2030. Today on the blog we’ll look at the significance of this commitment.

Support for $5 Billion Research Fund

Back on March 10, 2021, representatives from all over the industry came together to announce something big. They were supporting a proposed $5 billion fund to develop and support decarbonization in the industry. Eight governments backed this proposal and submitted it to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for review. This is significant for several reasons.

For one, without coordinated international efforts like this, decarbonization is simply a pipe dream. It is an initiative that requires international cooperation. So, with eight countries (Nigeria, Switzerland, Singapore, Greece, Georgia, Liberia, Malta, and Japan) and several large organizations (BIMCO and IMCA to name two) backing the proposal, this signals true cross-national commitment. Additionally, the funding proposal itself is targeted with very particular goals to drive change. It would create a research and development board which would fund R&D efforts across the globe, including in developing countries.

This is a key commitment, as currently there aren’t the necessary technologies to decarbonize the industry at scale. So, with this plan in place, the foundation is in place for accelerated change.

Decarbonization: A UN Initiative

This proposal is actually in response to an initiative from the United Nations. Back in 2018, UN delegates associated with the IMO agreed to reduce total emissions by 50% (from levels in 2008) by 2050. The recent proposal is a sign of additional commitment to specific action steps to help meet this goal. By putting funding behind research and development for emerging technologies, the industry will be able to create a decarbonized future that can reduce environmental impact and also create sustainable practices.

Potential Solutions: Ammonia and More

Creating these low- and no-carbon solutions will be a challenge. However, there are already some ideas about how this might develop. One such solution is ammonia. Ammonia is a fuel source that doesn’t emit any carbon when it’s burned. Also, it can be made fairly simply with renewable electricity, air, and water, and it can be stored much more easily than other fuel sources like hydrogen. Plus, it boasts an extremely high energy density, making it an ideal fuel source.

However, there aren’t currently any shipping vessels with the equipment to burn ammonia for fuel. Plus, nobody is creating ammonia in a climate-friendly way at scale currently. So, these are two areas to be on the lookout for over the next several years. It’s likely that some of the projects from the $5 billion research and development fund will focus on green ammonia production and creating ammonia-fueled ships. There are some other options innovators are considering as well. For example, hydrogen could be a potential fuel source going forward. Additionally, innovative fuel cells and wind-harnessing technologies are in the works.

One thing is for certain: there’s a revolution in the shipping industry to move towards greener, more sustainable practices. This is an exciting and necessary step as we try to protect the environment while serving consumer and business needs across the globe.

Mobile Offices: RVs, Campers, and more

Mobile offices are not a new concept. But in the past several years, more and more people have been taking the idea in new directions. Here’s a look at some trends in mobile offices.

Campers and RVs with Mobile Offices

For years, people have been figuring out ways to work out of mobile setups. For example, with some research and hard work, campers and RVs can be converted into work-friendly spaces. One important consideration in these setups is desk space. A non-modified RV or camper is unlikely to have desk space that is key for working. As such, a lot of the modifications you need to make for this setup are related to the work space itself. This can mean installing side table,
converting an existing space, or even just using foldable or movable desks or tables.

You need the proper infrastructure in place to work from these spaces too. Internet is one key need for a lot of people working remotely. There are a few creative ways people who work from RVs and campers make sure they have internet access. For one, there is often free internet at RV parks where you can stay for a period of time. While this is great and accessible, it’s also not secure most of the time. For security, you can always beef up your devices with VPNs to bolster security and privacy while on public WiFi. Another potential solution is to invest in a mobile WiFi hotspot, giving you your own source for internet access. Many phone and internet service providers offer options for mobile hotspots.

Beyond internet, there are some more basic needs you have to address for truly mobile workspaces. Water, electricity, and plumbing are all necessary particularly when mobile offices are also where you live. Technology like solar panels are a pivotal way many people power their RVs and campers. When paired with large batteries that hold charges for your various needs, you’d be surprised at how much energy you can generate for yourself.

Coronavirus Pandemic

All of these ideas have likely been accelerated recently by the coronavirus pandemic. The pandemic has caused some huge changes to how many people work. Remote work has been at least a part-time solution for lots of businesses, and a long-term reality for some people. According to Gallup polling data from October 2020, 33% of people in the United States were working remotely all the time, with an additional 25% working remotely some of the time. Back in April 2020, the numbers were even higher, with 51% working remotely all the time and 18% some of the time. Though there has been a downtrend in the percent of people working remotely, the numbers are still very high. Over half of workers in the United States are working remotely at least some of the time. As a result, more and more people have entertained the idea of changing up where they are working. Whether short or longer-term, they have found value in working somewhere other than home.

Of course, many of the aspects of these new mobile offices are reflective of mobile office trailers that have existed for a while. Mobile office trailers are a great solution for many businesses. Check out our blog post on mobile offices to learn more about what they can offer!

The Benefits of a Mobile Office

A mobile office is an excellent option for many businesses. They offer a variety of benefits including flexibility, mobility, expanded workspace, and more. Read along to find out more about how a mobile office can help your business!

Flexible terms, sizes, and functionality

One of the biggest advantages a mobile office gives you is flexibility. These offices are flexible in a lot of different ways. For one, their terms are flexible. You can buy new or used, or rent short or long-term. This means that no matter your budget or timeline, there’s an option that can work for you! Additionally, you can find mobile offices of all sizes to meet your needs. From small 20 foot offices to larger 40 foot ones, you won’t have trouble finding the size you are looking for.

In addition to flexible terms and sizes, mobile offices give you another edge: they can be used for a lot of different functions. These offices can be meeting spaces, offices for filing paperwork, call centers, interview locations, break areas, and more. Mobile offices come with a variety of floor plans to meet these functions, with options like dividers, fluorescent lighting, sliding windows, and more. You can even pair them with portable restrooms on-site. With options to fit any sort of function, your mobile office can be what you need it to be. From the simplest office space to a plush space with all of the bells and whistles, these units are completely adaptable.

Mobility and transportation

Mobile offices have another crucial element of adaptability, one that’s probably obvious from their name: mobility. These offices are designed for easy transportation. Many, like Moon’s wheeled office trailers, are easy to haul anywhere by truck. This means you can have an office where you need it when you need it. You can also change locations quickly, moving to new sites with ease. If you’re in a pinch and need office space fast, mobile offices are great too. You can get a unit where you need it quickly. Last, but certainly not least, this mobility also allows you to be in the thick of a work site. You can be more available and responsive to make your projects more efficient and successful.

Mobile offices are affordable

Another great feature of mobile offices is their price point. Traditional office spaces are expensive, and often require long-term commitment. This is an expensive and rigid option that isn’t right for every situation. Compared to traditional office spaces, mobile offices are very affordable. Their flexible terms come into play here too, saving you money. No matter if you need an office for just a month, or even a whole year, you can rent a unit for as long as you need without paying for time that you don’t need it. Spending less on office space frees you up to invest in growing your business in other ways.
