Used and new storage containers for sale or rent

Choosing a Storage Container: Which One Is For Me?

All storage situation have different storage needs – Moon knows that. In fact, that’s exactly why there’s an option for 20 foot standard, 40 foot standard, 20 foot Hi Cube, and 40 foot Hi Cube storage containers available.

All of our storage containers boast:

  • A highly-monitored structure to maintain integrity and safety
  • Double swing doors at both ends of the container
  • Short or long term rental
  • Location accessibility evaluation
  • Secure lock boxes
  • ISO-Standards for cleanliness, dryness, and security

But which one would be better for your storage needs?

Here’s a few things to consider when making your decision on storage container size.

Use

While it may be one of the more obvious considerations, it’s still a very important one. What will it be used for? Is it workshop storage? Commercial storage? Parts, pieces, delicates, size – it all contributes to the ultimate decision.

If it’s commercial use that the storage container will be used for, ask yourself if the contents will grow. Spare parts and pieces always seem to have a way of multiplying, and if your business if one that finds yourself with an excess of materials that need to be put somewhere, consider opting for a 40 foot container for future materials.

If your storage container will be put towards personal or residential use – for short term storage of items while you deep clean in preparation for a move, or for long term use of seasonal items, make sure you correctly measure how much material you have. Our dimensions allow for plenty of space for most items, but some pieces of furniture may require disassembly if they’re to be put with other big items or bulk boxes.

We also offer a refrigerated option for both 20 and 40 foot containers, with the only difference that the 20 foot is a standard container and the 40 foot is a Hi Cube container. Be sure to take into account that these units offer approximately 2 feet less than the space you would get with an regular container – 17′ 11″ for the 20 foot container and 37′ 11″ for the 40 foot containers – in order to take into consideration the space necessary for the refrigeration equipment.

Dimensions

To avoid any stress about sizes and space, our storage containers have a comprehensive list of dimensions, as listed below.

Dimensions of 20 or 40 foot storage containers

Standard or Hi Cube?

Besides just a 20 and 40 foot size option, Moon also offers the Hi Cube option for both lengths. These containers add an additional foot of height to your storage solution, making any tight spaces just a little easier to breathe in.

Standard containers come in approximate weights of 8,000 lbs. with a 2,694 cubic foot storage capacity for the 40 foot, and 5,000 lbs. with a 1,665 cubic foot capacity for the 20 foot storage container.

This may be changed by negligible amounts from standard to Hi Cube storage containers, but depending on your need, one foot may make all the difference, especially if your contents are fragile and you want some wiggle room.

Space Availability

Speaking of wiggle room, another factor you’ll have to consider is the space you have available for a storage container. These can be delivered and placed on ground level or on a chassis for dock-level access – again, it’s all very dependent on the application your storage container will be serving.

Moon offers a delivery location accessibility evaluation, so that you don’t have to worry, but if you’re in the initial stages of decision-making, our delivery methods for 20 foot storage containers are via a 35 foot flatbed roll-back truck, and our 40 foot storage containers are via a semi-truck with a 40 foot tilt-bed trailer.

Be sure to assure plenty of space for delivery, and call 502-776-2199 for a delivery location accessibility evaluation!

Pros and Cons of Renting or Buying Cargo Shipping Containers for Travel, Storage, International Purposes

Should I Rent or Buy A Shipping Container? 5 Important Questions To Consider

In the market for a shipping container? If you’re not sure what you’re looking for, it can be stressful! Shipping containers can be a major investment, so it’s important to consider your specific needs in the decision-making process.

Here at Moon Trailer Leasing, we talk customers through the logistics of buying and renting containers every day. We have decades of experience helping businesses and individuals make informed choices for their needs.

That’s why we’ve compiled some of the most important questions you should consider when buying or renting a container. By the time you read through these, you should have a much clearer idea of what you’re looking for! Let’s dive right in.

Question 1: What is it for?

The biggest question you’ll face is why am I purchasing a shipping container. Is your business in need of a durable shipping container for intercontinental voyages, for years on end? Are you looking to remodel a used shipping container into a tiny home, or repurpose it as a shed or pool? Do you want to customize the sides of the trailer with your business logo or some sort of design? If you want to permanently modify or maintain a shipping container for a significant amount of time, you should likely consider buying it outright.

On the other hand, if you’re using a shipping container for temporary storage, travel, an event, as an office, or for other related business endeavors, renting may be in your best interest. Asking yourself this question is a great way to get the ball rolling and begin to figure out what you’re looking for.

Question 2: How long will I need it?

The next question to consider is time-frame. Renting a shipping container is far more affordable if you plan on using it on a weekly or monthly basis. However, if you know you’ll consistently need a container for over a year, consider buying. The bottom line is: if your time-frame is up-in-the-air in any way, start with renting!

Some rental companies also provide on-site storage and delivery options for rentals, which makes the whole process a breeze. If you work with a leasing company like Moon, you won’t have to worry about finding a storage space, lugging the container around, or exposing it to the elements. We’re here to handle everything for you!

Question 3: Where will it travel?

As mentioned in Question 1, the types of trips that your shipping container will make is very important to consider. If you’re using the container for storage, renting with a company that can keep it safe for you is a great idea. If you’re thinking about taking the container around the world, or altering it in any major way, buying is better. Unfurnished containers can weigh anywhere between 5,000 and 8,000 pounds, often requiring semi-trucks using special trailers to be moved. That’s why some leasing companies offer transportation, delivery, and relocation services, which can make traveling with your container remarkably easier. At Moon, we offer all of this, as well as a preliminary Delivery Accessibility Evaluation to help assess your specific needs before bringing you your trailer.

Question 4: What size do I need?

Shipping containers are not one-size-fits-all. There are so many sizes on the market, designed for specific purposes and activities. Many people tend to overestimate and underestimate their sizing needs and purchase the wrong size container. We have both 20 ft and 40 ft containers available for purchase or rental, as well as 20 and 40 ft “Hi-cube” containers which are 1 foot taller than standard containers. If you’re stocking up a trailer for overseas or intercontinental travel, it’s not a good idea to have a lot of empty space for your items to roll around! We can evaluate your inventory and sizing needs to help you choose a trailer specific to your cargo needs.

Question 5: What quality of shipping container do I need?

Are you looking for a “brand new” trailer, or are you okay with a used one? Many used cargo containers for sale are deemed to be wind and watertight and have a long life ahead of them. Choosing to buy or rent a used trailer can be markedly more affordable, especially during shipping container shortages and economic downswings. At Moon, we rent and sell both new and used containers that are thoroughly-inspected to meet ISO requirements as well as our own rigorous quality standards. Make sure you’re working with a company you can trust, or you may find holes or signs of disrepair after it’s too late!

Cargo Containers, Used and New Containers, Buy Cargo Containers

3 Ways You Can Re-purpose A Shipping Container In Kentucky

A cargo shipping container can be used for a variety of purposes besides transportation. Here are a few ways re-purposed cargo containers are used around the world and in Kentucky.

3 Ways You Can Re-purpose Shipping Containers In Kentucky

Living Spaces

People have been making residences out of shipping containers for years. Homes, apartments, and dorms are all creations that you can build or purchase from companies that convert containers. These residences aren’t just mobile and compact. They can have as many features as you want, including full plumbing, bathrooms, air conditioning, heat, rooftops, porches, and more.

Here in Kentucky, there have been many notable shipping container home projects in the past several years. In 2014, Habitat for Humanity started work on one of the first shipping container homes in Kentucky near Elizabethtown.

Plus, back in 2016, there were plans to build a series of container homes in the Schnitzelburg neighborhood in Louisville (the plans were later scrapped, though). You can even stay in a shipping container cabin in Slade near the Red River Gorge through Airbnb.

Restaurants and Office Spaces

In addition, restaurant and other business owners have re-purposed shipping containers for use. Worldwide, there are pop-up shops in London, England and a container city in Cholula, Mexico, just to name two instances.

In Louisville, a few examples have also sprung up recently. Copper & Kings, a brandy distillery in the Butchertown neighborhood, has used several shipping containers for a boutique and visitor’s center. Plus, Royal’s Chicken’s location in Nulu has shipping containers outside for seating.

Most recently, the initial building for a project called Opportunity Corner in Russell has begun to take form in Louisville. The project will provide office spaces to help grow a self-sustaining space for entrepreneurs and other community members. This project follows in a tradition of using mobile offices as workplaces. Construction professionals have long used storage container offices on-site. They provide the advantage of mobility, sturdiness, and flexible work and storage space.

Shipping Container Farming

Lastly, farmers have used shipping containers to produce food. There are a growing number of companies that make shipping containers for agricultural work. Farmers can grow everything from herbs to leafy greens for industries like nutrition and fragrance.

These container farms offer a few key benefits for farmers. They are readily available, compact, cheap up front, and easy to transport. Many farmers are excited about container farms and see them as a way to produce fresh and local food more readily. However, there are some challenges as well. For one, the environment within the containers can be hard to control. In addition, a container that is too small for the number of farm workers may be difficult to move around in. Plus, overhead can become expensive after the initial container build.

It can certainly take a lot of work and money to make a shipping container a living space or business location. But with the right investment, they have the potential to be a sustainable solution. One thing is for sure: interest in re-purposing these containers has increased over the past few years and shows no sign of stopping.

Moon Trailer Leasing offers shipping containers to companies and organizations across Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee. Call 502-776-2199 today for a fast and free quote.

Planning for a construction project

8 Ways To Get Organized For A Major Construction Project

Want to stay organized with your construction project?

Working on a major construction project isn’t easy. You need to plan and execute every aspect carefully to ensure successful results. It is a project manager’s responsibility to make sure nothing goes wrong during construction. They oversee the project from initial discussions to final handover. If you’re planning for significant work, here are 8 important things you can do to stay organized with your construction project.

  1. Establish A Work Breakdown Structure

A Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) is a visual project plan. It includes all sections of the project like deliverables, project schedules, and other information. It provides an excellent overview of a project, helping teams stay on track and be aware of the bigger picture. This also allows teams to determine how delays or issues with one section will impact the rest. A Work Breakdown Structure is one of the first things project managers should work on after a client approves a project.

  1. Create A Scope Statement

Scope statements help teams keep the end goals in mind. It can be easy to become lost in the intricate details of a project and forget what a client truly wants. A scope statement includes the hopes and dreams of the client, so your team can always be aware of it. This may just seem like simple planning. However, experienced project managers know it has a big impact on customer satisfaction rates.

  1. Develop A Risk-Management Plan

Every construction project includes risks. There’s always a possibility that you may run into budget problems, a delay with materials, poor raw material quality, or team turnover. Therefore, project managers must have contingency plans to help ensure the construction continues on schedule without any major delays. A risk management plan provides key guidelines on how team members should respond to changes. Construction is a long-term fluid project, and details often change. So, a good plan can help people maintain proper flow during projects.

  1. Implement A Communication Plan

Project managers are often the bridge between the on-site teams and other stakeholders like clients, company executives, and investors. They need to maintain proper communication with dozens of people at any given time, which is why a good plan is essential. You need to keep open, accessible communication that doesn’t disrupt a project but ensures everyone is on the same page. Establish efficient channels early on in the planning stages and make sure you have emergency communications in place as well. A good plan will help you avoid delays.

  1. Set Up Performance Metrics

Setting up performance metrics is a good way to track your team’s efficiency. This is vital for long-term and large-scale construction projects, where teams can quickly lose focus or become overwhelmed. To avoid this, a project manager must identify gaps in performance and implement procedures to help their team.

  1. Ensure A Quality Assurance Process

Large construction projects require quality assessments at every stage. Establishing proper control at every stage of a project can help you keep track of overall quality. This helps improve customer satisfaction rates while ensuring the design is sound.

  1. Set Up An Efficient Worksite

Your construction team will work best if your worksite is organized, efficient and comfortable. Figuring out traffic flow at the site and ordering equipment like dumpsters, restrooms, showers, and mobile office trailers help your team perform effectively. Experienced companies like Moon Trailer Leasing can help you plan in advance and provide you with the highest quality equipment.

  1. Establish Safety Protocols

Construction sites can be risky places. It is essential to establish proper safety protocols before starting work on any construction project. Plan how to respond to emergencies, provide safety training, and make sure everyone has proper safety gear.

Thorough planning can help you stay organized with your construction project. For more information about planning and renting or buying equipment, contact Moon Trailer Leasing today at 502-776-2199.

Importing and Exporting To and From the United States with Moon Shipping Containers

shipping containers coming into US ports

Millions of shipping containers enter and leave U.S. ports every year. The modular design of many shipping containers makes the vessels ideal for transport by sea, rail and truck.

Are you thinking about buying a shipping container to import or export goods to the United States? Every year millions of shipping containers enter U.S. ports. The modular design of  standard shipping containers is ideal for transport by ship with easy transition to rail or truck upon arrival in the U.S.

If you do not have experience with importing or exporting cargo, there are many rules and regulations to learn. Follow along for more information about shipping cargo in a container to the United States.

  1. Prepare To Declare Your Goods – When you ship a container of goods into the United States, you must declare the items that you are shipping to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This is required to make sure that you are complying with U.S. regulations.
  2. Obtain The Required Permits And/Or Licensure – Depending on what you are shipping, you often are required to have a permit or license. Several U.S. agencies require licensure for imported goods, depending on the items that you are importing. Certain regions of the U.S. also require a special license from local government offices or states.
  3. Learn About Import Quotas – Depending on what you are shipping, certain commodities have import quotas that restrict the volume allowed to enter the U.S. in an established period of time.
  4. Contact Your Port Of Entry – Before you ship cargo to the United States, you may want to reach out of the U.S. port of entry where your items will first arrive. There are over 300 U.S. ports of entry (and this includes sea, air and land). Speaking with a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) import specialist can be very useful if you have any questions or concerns. Keep in mind that ports of entry also conduct inspections related to agriculture in order to protect against diseases that might damage crops, animals, and the environment more broadly.
  5. Have Answers To Common Questions – When you contact the port of entry, it’s beneficial to have information available for common questions you might be asked including the following:

6 Frequently Asked Questions about Used Containers

1. What sizes do your used shipping containers come in?

We have been buying and selling used shipping containers for a very long time. Given this, our inventory includes used shipping containers in a wide variety of sizes. We offer used high cube containers and standard containers. High cube containers are about 1 foot taller and six inches wider than standard containers. They tend to be a popular choice for commercial and industrial clients. We also offer used containers that are either ground level or dock level, depending on your needs.

2. What condition are your used shipping containers in?

We sell shipping containers that are in different conditions. While all of our used shipping containers are still of high quality and built to serve as great storage units, they vary in terms of wear and tear. Some of our containers are what we would call “cargo-worthy.” This is a used cargo container that is certainly capable of storing and transporting cargo. Other used containers are what we call “one trip” containers. If you are interested in purchasing a used shipping container, we can easily describe our selection to you so that you can get a container that fully meets your storage needs.

3. What do the shipping container ratings mean in terms of A, B and C?

Companies that buy and sell used shipping containers sometimes apply different ratings to distinguish between the amount of wear and tear. This may include A, B and C ratings. It is important to note that these types of ratings are not really objective. They are based on the opinion of a particular shipping container dealer, so it is important to work with a company that has a trustworthy reputation and stands by every shipping container sale.

4. What is a used “one trip” shipping container?

A cargo container that is referred to as a “one trip container” is typically one made internationally (usually China) and shipped to the U.S. filled with cargo. After the container arrives in the U.S. it is sold, often times in “like new” condition. While one trip containers have been used, they are typically in excellent condition. Oftentimes they are free of the dings, dents, rust, markings and general wear and tear that older containers with more use have. They are also wind and water tight. These used portable storage containers have a long life ahead of them. Compared to shipping containers that have been around for a longer time, you’ll also find that the color of one trip containers is more predictable. They are usually white, tan or gray.
